Orchard Road was derived directly from its name.. This stretch of road was an Orchard in the past. It's chinese name is a direct translation. It was also an expensive area just like now. Except that there was a market and older shops unlike the modern tall buildings and malls. The market was also known to the local as "Golden Market". And of course there were the Silver, Bronze and metal markets located at other areas too.

If it helps, the word 'Orchard' means an area of land devoted to the cultivation of fruit or nut trees and that is exactly what Orchard Road was named after. Many nutmeg plantations, pepper farms and fruit orchards used to line the streets in the 1830s. Sparsely populated, Orchard Road's only residents were plantation owners like Scotts, Cairnhill and Cuppage, whose names are familiar as local street names today.

Orchard Road derives its name from the sprawling orchards of nutmeg and pepper that dominated the area in the 1880s. The trees that shade the ever-present crowds are almost the only reminder that this area was, in the 19th century, an orchard lined with nutmeg and pepper plantations. From a vast plantation, the district has now become prime real estate, full of swanky shopping malls and condominiums and one of Singapore's most coveted business and residential areas. However, between the five-star hotels and hulking shrines to materialism, a few architectural relics from this time remain. When you've had your fill of the shops and chilly air-conditioning, escape is close to hand with the serene Singapore Botanic Gardens a short bus ride from the west end of the road.
