  4. hevs Says:

Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields are famous because The Beatles wrote songs about them. Menlove Avenue is famous because it’s where John Lennon grew up in his aunt Mimi’s house. Sorry don’t know any more!

  5. Neil Says:

1st answer Abby Road is in London not Liverpool.

  6. JAMES B Says:

Let’s get the ones relating to The Beatles out of the way first…..

    1) Abbey Road : Beatles cover (see ADDENDUM below.)
    2) Penny Lane : Beatles song.
    3) Church Street : location of St. Peters Church, where Paul McCartney and John Lennon were first introduced.
    4) Mathew Street : home of The Cavern Club, where The beatles and many, many other great bands have played over the years.
    5) Menlove Avenue : where John Lennon most famously lived.
    6) Forthlin Road : where Paul McCartney most famously lived.
    7) Arnold Grove : where George Harrison most famously lived. 8) Admiral Grove : where Ringo Starr most famously lived.

And on to the others …..

    9) Mill Road : home of the famous maternity hospital where all true Scousers are born (me amongst them!)
    10) Aintree Lane : famous for being a continuous road that changes name (Aintree Lane, Wango Lane, School Lane, Aintree Lane) and for running past the racecourse where the Grand National horse race is held.
    11) Lime Street : home of the railway station, Empire Theatre and the incredible St. George’s Hall.
    12) Brookside Close : they made a TV soap there of the same name. (Okay, it’s a fictional name for a real place, but who’s THAT pedantic?!!)
    13) The Strand : see the Three Graces at the Western end - the Royal Liver Building (surmounted by two bronze domes with a Liver Bird, the city’s symbol, on each), the Cunard Building (headquarters of the old Cunard Shipping Company) and the Port of Liverpool Building (former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.)
    14) Corner of Hope Street and Hardman Street : the Philharmonic Dining Rooms is here. Known locally as the Philharmonic Pub or simply “The Phil” and famous for its ornate Victorian toilets. Honestly!
    15) Queensway : Mersey Tunnel Number 1.
    16) Kingsway : Mersey Tunnel Number 2. (There’s a railway tunnel as well, but we’re only interested in roads here.)
    17) Cathedral Close : Runs along the front of arguably one of the greatest neo-Gothic buildings in the World, the Anglican Cathedral.
    18) Mount Pleasant : cathedral number 2, the Roman Catholic one, known as “Paddy’s Wigwam” or “The Pope’s Spaceship”.
    19) Selbourne Street : scene of the (in)famous heavy-handed arrest of Leroy Alphonse Cooper which led to the Toxteth riots of July 1981.
    20) Anfield Road : on which sits the ground of the greatest football team on the planet, Liverpool F.C. (okay, slightly partisan answer there!)

Strawberry Fields was an orphanage, rather than a street name, just in case you were wondering why it wasn’t mentioned.

    .

ADDENDUM 1 : For the benefit of “Neil” (above.)
Not sure why you make a point of mentioning a place called “Abby Road.” But just in case you mean “Abbey Road” then simply because the one featured on the cover of the album was in London doesn’t mean that there ISN’T one in Liverpool. Artistic licence is a wonderful thing.

Furthermore, what’s a “duel” carriageway? The road that featured in Steven Spielberg’s 1971 movie of the same name? And John Brodie didn’t “invent” DUAL carriageways, but he did put forward the proposals for the Queens Drive ring road and the East Lancs Road.

And Paul Mc lived on “Forthlin Road” not “Fortlyn Road”. And “Exchange Flags & “Chavasse Park” are places, not roads/streets. And the various spelling and grammatical errors would be too easy to document.

But I’ll not be picky about such things…..

ADDENDUM 2 : For the benefit of the insightful Mr “SaintsRLFC” (below.)
I repeat - Just because the “Abbey Road” featured on the cover of the album was in London doesn’t mean that there ISN’T one in Liverpool. Artistic licence is a wonderful thing.

And there’s no such place as “The Goree.” There’s a road called “Goree” and there used to be “Goree Warehouses” - both named after the island near Senegal. It’s certainly associated heavily with the slave trade, but as for the chaining or non-chaining issue, I’ll let people read up on that one.

Having said all that, what would a rugby fan - particularly of St Helens - know about geography, art, culture, history, reading or indeed manners?

A bunch of sweaty, fat men indulging in homoerotic wrestling in a muddy field anyone? No takers? What a surprise……!
